Appsolute Accountability: Apps, Medical Insurers Face Legal Consequences for Gender Transition
As lawmakers debate the future of children’s health care, parental rights and online safety, a growing movement of social conservatives is pushing for policies aimed at increasing transparency, accountability and protections for families confronted with the gender confusion of their kids. Craig DeRoche, President and CEO of Family Policy Alliance, will be in Washington, D.C., during the week of July 20-24 for the annual Social Conservative Policy Conference (SoConCon), where more than 400 leaders in the movement will gather to discuss policy victories, emerging threats and the future direction of the conservative movement.

DeRoche is available to discuss the newly introduced TRUTH in Coverage Act, legislation designed to address the growing number of Americans who have experienced medical complications after undergoing gender-transition procedures and are now seeking restorative gender care. The legislation would require group health plans and insurance providers that cover sex-rejecting procedures to also provide coverage for treatments addressing the documented harms associated with those gender procedures.
Family Policy Alliance is a supporter of the legislation, which seeks to ensure that individuals who regret undergoing these procedures are not denied medical care needed to address complications, including reproductive injury, endocrine dysfunction, surgical complications, chronic pain, bone loss, cardiovascular issues and mental health challenges. Supporters argue that patients deserve transparency, informed consent and access to care regardless of their previous medical decisions.
“For years, Family Policy Alliance has fought to protect children from irreversible surgeries and dangerous drugs, including drafting the first Help Not Harm bill in the nation,” DeRoche said. “That effort has now become law in 27 states protecting more than 34 million children across the country. The TRUTH in Coverage Act affirms that every family needs fairness and transparency in the consequential health care coverage decisions for gender dysphoria. We applaud Sen. Marshall and Rep. Harshbarger for championing informed consent and true patient choice in health care.”
DeRoche can also discuss another major front in the fight to protect children: holding Big Tech accountable through App Store Accountability Act legislation. The effort, which has passed in Utah, Louisiana, Texas and Alabama, establishes age verification standards and places greater responsibility on technology companies to protect minors from harmful online content.
The legislation recently received a significant boost when the Supreme Court allowed Texas’ App Store Accountability Act to remain in effect, reinforcing the growing momentum behind efforts to give parents greater control over children’s digital environments. Family Policy Alliance Senior Fellow Melissa McKay has played a leading role in advancing the initiative, building on Utah’s distinction as the first state to pass such legislation.
As the largest convener of the social conservative movement, Family Policy Alliance will bring together elected officials, policy leaders and advocates at SoConCon to discuss the issues shaping the next phase of the movement.
