A spokesman for the group discusses a recent statement explaining exactly why this is the worst idea when it comes to restarting the government.
President Donald Trump is looking at solutions surrounding the effect of the government shutdown. But in the midst of that, he’s stumbled upon one that could have dire consequences surrounding anti-gun legislation.
He has suggested using a filibuster to end the government shutdown, which serves as a “nuclear option” of sorts. However, in a statement, Erich Pratt, who is the Senior Vice President for the Gun Owners of America, made it specifically clear why this is a terrible idea.
“Destroying the filibuster would be a disaster for the Second Amendment. The truth is, the filibuster is the critical tool that GOA has used for years to defeat mandatory gun registration, bans on common firearms, crushing restrictions on gun shows, national gun confiscation laws and countless other gun-grabbing schemes,” he explained.
“If the filibuster falls, no matter who demands it, the gun control crowd in Congress will ram every radical gun control bill into law. That’s why your action is absolutely critical, right now. I need you to send a message to your senators today. Tell them: Protect the filibuster and don’t give up the ONE tool that’s topped gun control for decades! Enshrine the filibuster into law.”
With that, the group has suggested everyone to sign a pre-written letter to protect the filibuster at all costs.
With that, Stephen Willeford, the 2017 “hero with a gun” who serves as spokesman for the group, joins us now to discuss Pratt’s statement further, and how devastating a filibuster could actually be.
Q&A:
- Why is the filibuster such a bad idea when it comes to ending government shutdown?
- What kind of anti-gun legislation could be introduced should the filibuster be done away with?
- Are there other viable solutions that Trump should consider, rather than the filibuster?
- Along with people signing the pre-written letter put in place to protect the filibuster, what other steps can they take to protect it? Perhaps contacting key Republicans?
- Speaking of what’s happening in government, where do you see the argument surrounding gun rights going as 2026 approaches? Will some cities continue to try and create anti-gun laws?
- You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
