The spokesman for the group explains why this fight against Biden’s unfair rule is so important right now.
The Biden Administration has been working closely with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on a new rule that requires background checks on the private sales of firearms. And Texas isn’t about to take it lying down.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is challenging the rule, working not only alongside other states, but also supportive groups, including the Gun Owners of America.
The rule would apparently subject “hundreds of thousands of law-abiding gun owners to presumptions of criminal guilty for all manner of activities relating to the innocuous, statutorily authorized and constitutionally protected private sale of firearms.”
Erich Pratt, Senior Vice President of the GOA, noted, “We warned the American public that this legislation brokered by Senator Cornyn was no small compromise, and here we are today filing our second lawsuit challenging a major policy derived from that anti-gun law.
“Criminalizing untold numbers of Americans for simply selling a firearm in a private party transaction is wrong, unconstitutional, and must be halted by the courts. Anything less would further encourage this tyrannical administration to continue weaponizing vague statutes into policies that are meant to further harass and intimidate gun owners and dealers at every turn.”
Joining us now to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, the spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall Willeford being the “hero with a gun” with the Sutherland Springs situation in 2017, in which he’s co-authored a book. His expertise on gun rights make him an ideal interviewee for this subject.
Q&A:
- Why are President Biden and the ATF so determined to get this information on gun sales? Doesn’t that violate the rights of private gun owners looking to purchase these weapons?
- What is it about this rule going beyond the changes made by Senator John Cornyn when it comes to his “compromise” gun control package? Combined, are they creating a big problem for private gun owners?
- What do you hope will be the result of this suit?
- If the gun groups and various states are victorious, could the ATF and Biden potentially come up with some other sort of rule to take away rights from private gun owners?
- You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
- Where can people find your book?
