The Epoch Times’ Nan Su discusses the report, in which Gou is still pushing for his bid to become the new president of Taiwan.
It’s no secret that China has been pressuring for ownership of nearby country Taiwan, despite not having any real legal claim to it. But this matter has taken an interesting, personal turn, revolving around Foxconn Technology Group founder Terry Gou.
A report from Bloomberg that, after being away for several days from the public spotlight, Gou returned to confirm he’s still in the running for Taiwan’s next Presidential election – despite the pressure coming from China with its recent call of an investigation into Foxconn.
China’s self-run Global Times reported at the start of this week that its authorities were taking a closer look at Foxconn, namely with its taxes and the company’s general land use in China. It noted that it was doing so under “normal law enforcement,” though some believe it is due to personal pressure over his running for Taiwan’s Presidential seat.
The move cost Foxconn’s publicly traded arm Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. and three affiliates a total of over $9 billion in value. That said, Gau remains undaunted in his bid for President, despite a very overcrowded market of nominees.
But this seems to be the latest example of China trying to apply pressure, directly or otherwise, against Taiwan, including numerous encounters with both that particular country and the United States.
So what happens next? Joining us to discuss this further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. His expertise in all things China will certainly be useful in this matter.
Q&A:
- Why do you think China is attempting to investigate Foxconn now? Is this personal pressure against Gau, or is the country simply trying to indirectly gain leverage over Taiwan?
- Do you believe the country’s announcement through its own media outlet was fully intended as a way to drain billions of dollars from Foxconn’s partners and affiliates?
- This seems to be the latest move by China and leader Xi Jinping against Taiwan. What do you believe will come next?
- Do you think Gau has a fair shot at landing Taiwan’s Presidency? And if not, what do you think he’ll do next regarding his investigation?
- Are you concerned with the performance of Xi Jinping? Should his moves with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) be of concern, especially to the United States?
- Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final War. Tell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
