The Epoch Times’ Nan Su discusses the country’s latest moves, and why it’s something that shouldn’t be ignored.
Over the past year, leader Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party has certainly been making unsettling decisions, particularly with Taiwan and the United States. But now, it could be trying to cause trouble on the South China Sea – mainly by staking claim to it.
According to the AP News, the country has revealed a new map that shows its claim in the area, including contested parts of India and Russia. This has resulted in a number of official objections, though it doesn’t appear to be responding to them. At least, not yet.
One of the most noteworthy examples of this is Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island, which has been claimed as Chinese territory. But per the article, but China and Russia agreed nearly two decades ago that the island would be split.
There are more standoffs as well, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and others. And if that’s not enough, according to Independent UK, China actually came very close to creating trouble with a Philippine patrol ship in the area, as they appear to be attempting to enact on its new terms on the map.
A Philippines’ coastguard spokesperson noted, “We condemn the behavior of the Chinese coastguard vessel. They have been violating international law, particularly the collision regulations.”
