A majority of Americans believe political, racial, and class divisions are getting worse, according to the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service Battleground Civility Poll. In fact, approximately 7 in 10 voters believe the political divide has become so much that America could be at the “edge of a civil war.”
According to results of the institute’s Battleground Poll, the political division is likely to make the upcoming 2020 presidential race the nastiest in modern history.
It’s been nearly 160 years since the beginning of America’s first civil war – a war where lines were drawn geographically. The thought of a new type of civil war is alarming, and clearly on the minds of an alarming number of American voters. This war wouldn’t be fought between North and South, but neighbor against neighbor. With the economy thriving and human rights and quality of life in America being at an all time high for human history, many of us are left asking ‘why?” How have we gotten to this point?
Helping answer that question is Dave Workman, spokesman for the 2nd Amendment Foundation, has whose writings have been published on this topic and is available to be your interview guest.
While voters agree that societal divisions are growing, they don’t all appear to agree on the source of the incivility. According to Georgetown “Majorities of Republicans say Democratic political leaders, social media, large newspapers, CNN, and MSNBC are very responsible for our political division. Meanwhile, majorities of Democrats say Republican political leaders, social media, Fox News, wealthy special interests, and President Trump are very responsible. Independents single out just two actors as very responsible for divisive political discourse – social media and President Trump.”
At the recent Gun Rights Policy Conference in Phoenix, there were two panels on state legislative affairs and federal affairs briefing, plus an interesting panel whose discussion was headlined, “Culture Drives Gun Politics.” Delivering opening remarks at the weekend conference, Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation and chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, told the audience that the war against gun rights “has gone nuclear.”
When American’s can’t even agree on what is causing the problem, even experts are unclear, how can they know how to resolve this conflict, close the divide and come together and avoid the start of this next potential ‘civil war’? What is next for America? Is ‘civil war’ inevitable? That remains to be seen. And if liberals were to declare a civil war against pro-gun conservatives, the glaring question is how would liberals even defend themselves without guns?
