Law enforcement veteran Michael Letts wonders why a tax agency would have such interest in tactical shotguns and rifles.
Over the past few months, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have been under the microscope, with many suggesting nefarious actions by the government agencies. But it appears that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) may not be keeping their hands clean either.
A new report from OpentheBooks.com indicates that the IRS has managed to spend $10 million on “weaponry and gear,” including rifles and tactical shotguns. It’s reportedly been stocking up since the coronavirus started to settle in back in 2020.
Most of the spending apparently came from ammunition, which cost the agency $2.3 million, though ballistic shields were close behind with $1.2 million spent.
According to the report, “4,500 guns and has stockpiled 5 million rounds of ammunition for use by its 2,159 special agents.” It also notes that, with these additional numbers, there are “more federal agents with arrest and firearm authority (200,000) than the U.S. Marines (186,000).”
But why the need to arm agents with a tax agency? With us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years of experience under his belt. Letts is currently President, Founder and CEO of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. His expertise should prove quite useful in this matter.
Q&A:
- So what do you believe the reasoning is for the sudden arming of IRS agents? Do they expect some sort of fight when it comes to collecting owed money, or is it something else?
- Does it seem sort of suspicious considering that the IRS is arming themselves rather than working with another government agency to follow up on suspicious types?
- Is it concerning at all that they have more armed agents than the actual U.S. Marines? Do they really need such an excessive number of agents?
- The IRS has yet to officially comment on the report given by OpentheBooks.com. Do you believe this is intentional? Or should they confirm whether they’re arming their agents or not?
- Do you believe these armed agent numbers will continue to grow in the months ahead? Could the Department of Justice or the FBI possibly lend them a hand as well, depending on who they’re going after?
