The law enforcement veteran explains why it’s not up to Congress to decide what training police officers need.
A new progressive-backed bill is making its way through Congress, with the focus on mandating cultural and sensitivity training for police recruits. However, aside from some support through a few Democrats, it’s being shredded to bits. And rightfully so.
Several Republicans, who have served as police officers themselves, note that “it is not the role of Congress, no should it be, to tell local agencies what that training should look like.”
However, Rep. John Rutherford, R-Fla., did make it clear that “it is imperative that law enforcement officers are well-trained on agency policy and procedures and held to the highest standards that keep both officers and the public safe.” That said, it should be up to the departments at hand, and not higher-ups.
Especially considering that a lot of those higher-ups in Congress haven’t even budged restoring any sort of budget cuts on police departments. They were slashed years ago in the face of the “defund the police” riots; and despite promises made by President Joe Biden, no movement has been made on bringing that money back.
So Democrats are so concerned about police officer ethics and not so much their well-being? Joining us to discuss the matter further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years of experience under his belt.
