Who Let Him On Flydubai? (Guest: David Rubin)

New details reveal just what the co-pilot of the flight did, and worse yet, his history of being an uncontrollable radical.

Days after the incident took place, more details are coming in about what occurred on the Flydubai flight, with co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami going after his fellow pilot in an attempted act of terror. And these details certainly have former Mayor of Shiloh David Rubin, founder and president of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund interested in learning more.

  • Reports indicate that al-Hammami tried to take control of the plane using a crash axe, located in the cockpit, to try and subdue the threat.
  • The pilot was able to get the door open enough for passengers to subdue the terror threat and land the plane safely.
  • Hamam al-Hammami is reportedly an Omani national, and was removed from active flight training in Dubai due to his radical views.

According to the BBC, al-Hammami attempted to sabotage the cockpit using a crash axe that’s usually kept in there for emergency purposes. With that, he attacked the pilot and tried to take control of the aircraft.

Fortunately, Captain Smit Machchhar was able to open the door, even while injured, to allow passengers to come in, subdue al-Hammami and land the plane safely. “I told myself to go for one last push to open the door from inside,” he noted, as al-Hammami tried to keep everyone locked out.

According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, al-Hammami has been identified as an Omani national. What’s worse, he has been barred from flying in Dubai, mainly due to concerns over his radical views. That said, he was able to complete a three-year distance-learning course in the UK, and likely qualify for the flight.

Netanyahu made note that after being subdued, al-Hammami called out “Kill me, kill me!”, indicating he didn’t wish to be taken alive.

“So, it’s clear that he was suicidal,” he noted. “It looks very likely that he was going to down the plane.”

While details about al-Hammami’s plan are still being investigated, this is a serious wake-up call when it comes to the safety of Israeli citizens, as well as other travelers.

Rubin joins us now to discuss this situation further. Welcome, Mayor Rubin!

Q&A:

  1. How concerning has this incident become now that we’re learning that an Omani national allegedly attempted to carry out an attack on the plane?
  2. What does this say about those who will go to great lengths to hurt Israelis—or innocent people, for that matter?
  3. What do you think will happen from here? Will we see greater scrutiny when it comes to pilots being hired for flights, particularly those with a questionable history like al-Hammami reportedly had?
  4. What do you think should happen to al-Hammami now, or do we need to await further details from the investigation?
  5. Where do you see the conflict between Israel and Hamas ultimately heading? What would need to happen for a lasting peace to become possible?
  6. Tell us more about your work with the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund and how it helps children and families in need.
  7. Where can we learn more about you and the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund?

That experience is what led David to establish the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund, to help other young victims of Islamic terrorism, who need to process and deal with their trauma. Rubin, also the former Mayor of Shiloh, Israel is the author of seven books, including his latest, Confronting Radicals: What America Can Learn from Israel, which has recently been made into a movie.
