The Epoch Times’ Nan Su discusses the possibilities from the meeting – particularly with Jinping’s attempt to gain stature.
All eyes are on San Francisco this week, as China leader Xi Jinping prepares to meet with President Joe Biden.
The meeting, taking place today at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, comes at a crucial time for Jinping, as he attempts to show he’s a capable leader of a country that’s in the midst of a financial crisis. Not to mention the tension growing with other countries, including Taiwan.
Speaking with the Washington Post, Claremont McKenna College political scientist Minxin Pei noted, “Xi needs the summit more than Biden does. He needs to show he’s respected, that he has stature. He’s definitely in a worse position than in November of last year.”
Times have certainly changed following Jinping’s appearance at the Group of 20 summit last November. Between large street protests, economic collapse, and growing tension with both the United States and Taiwan, many have questioned his ability as a leader. However, this summit might cool some nerves, depending on how it goes.
With us now to discuss the possibilities of said meeting is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. Nan is an expert in all things China, so he can provide a great deal of insight on this subject. We welcome him to the show.
