What Will China Do With the Election of Taiwan’s New President?

The Epoch Times’ senior investigative reporter Nan Su discusses the election of William Lai, and what comes next.

Taiwan has a new president – and China doesn’t seem that pleased with the choice.

64-year old doctor-turned-politician William Lai Ching-te has been elected, with millions of Taiwanese people turning in their votes to elect him.

This has China on edge, as Beijing has labeled him as a “troublemaker” and a dangerous “separatist.” This comes on the heels of Lai insisting that there is “no need to declare independence, because Taiwan is already an independent sovereign state – its name is the Republic of China – Taiwan.”

If that doesn’t have China enough on edge, the U.S. pledged its support behind the new candidate, with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken offering a message of congratulations. Beijing has responded that this is sending “a gravely wrong signal” that the country isn’t going to forget.

So what happens now? Joining us to discuss this matter further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. Nan is an expert in all things China, so his expertise is certainly welcome in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. Do you believe William Lai Ching-te is an ideal choice as new leadership for Taiwan? Or do you believe there was another candidate that would’ve been a better choice?
  2. Is Beijing’s response to Lai’s election anything to be concerned with? Or are they merely calling him names in an effort to look strong?
  3. What about the U.S. offering their congratulations and China calling it a “gravely wrong signal”? Are they offended by Blinken being happy with Lai’s election?
  4. Where do you think the situation between China and the U.S./Taiwan will go in the months ahead? Could we potentially see a war between these parties if the situation doesn’t simmer down?
  5. Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  6. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
