The law enforcement veteran explains why officials need to do something about hiring additional patrolmen and women before it’s too late.
Ever since the “defund the police” movement launched in 2020, several states have seen a significant increase in crime and a drop-off in active officers on duty. And Washington State is no exception.
It was recently reported that more than 700,000 active concealed pistol licenses have been filed, per numbers from the Department of Licensing. In addition, a report suggests that per 1,000 residents within the city, there’s a significantly low number of commissioned police and sheriff’s deputies.
With homicides growing to an all-time high since the 2020 pandemic, and hardly any response from Washington State on any sort of new police hiring practices, many are wondering if any sort of turnaround is in sight. Especially for Seattle, which is in such dire straits with many residents leaving the city and businesses closing down.
So what can be done? Joining us now to discuss this matter further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years of experience under his belt. Letts is President, Founder and CEO of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various programs.
His expertise in all things law and order make him a great guest for this program. Welcome, Michael!
Q&A:
- Just how much damage did the “defund the police” movement do for police departments within the United States?
- Why hasn’t the damage been undone at this point? Why hasn’t President Joe Biden kept his promise to restore funding for these departments? Does he just not care anymore?
- What about the increase in crime and active concealed pistol licenses in Washington? Does Attorney General Bob Ferguson just not see this as a big problem?
- What will happen to Seattle as a result of this? Are more people likely to leave the city?
- Is it time for Washington to simply “fess up” and admit their gun control policies aren’t working? That they simply need to hire more police officers? More importantly, will they actually do it?
- Tell us more about InVest USA, and why support for fellow officers is so important right now.
