Virginia Is Seeing a Flurry of Gun Control Bills From Democrats, But Governor Glenn Youngkin Can See Right Through Most of Them

A Second Amendment representative explains why Youngkin’s actions will be for the better when it comes to private gun owners.

Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia certainly has his hands full.

Democratic advocates have been preparing a flurry of gun control bills, in the hopes that many of them would give them leeway to tell citizens their rights with weapons. But Youngkin isn’t expected to approve many of them.

According to this report from News Leader, the bills range from strengthening background checks to forbidding the transfer of a gun to a prohibited person to increasing penalties for improper firearm storage. However, according to local gun groups, Youngkin is only expected to sign two overall – one for tax credits for gun security mechanisms, and one that would penalize parents for not securing their firearms when it comes to their children.

Andrew Goddard, legislative director for the pro-gun control Virginia Center for Public Safety noted, “We anticipate that (Youngkin) will veto pretty much everything.”

That said, most of Virginia’s voter base – 70 percent, to be exact – believe in the power of gun safety measures. With that, Mike Fox, a volunteer with Moms Demand Action, issued the following warning: “He can either side with the overwhelming majority of Virginians who support common sense gun safety legislation like all of the bills that are going to be sent to him, or he can side with the gun lobby.”

Joining us is a member of the Second Amendment Foundation, a group that firmly believes in the right for all citizens to bear arms. Their expertise on all things gun rights make them helpful for this interview. Welcome!

Q&A:

  1. What do you think about Youngkin’s potential stance when it comes to knocking down most of these gun control bills? Does he see Democrats making excuses with putting these bills together, like most pro-gun advocates?
  2. It looks like he will approve one surrounding tax credits for gun security mechanisms. What are your thoughts on this?
  3. Around 70 percent of Virginia citizens believe that enhanced background checks, secure storage and a ban on ghost guns are needed. Do you believe most of them didn’t do their research on the subject, and just automatically concluded with the “guns are bad” stance that Democrats have been drumming up?
  4. Could this situation come back to hurt Youngkin when it comes to the next election? Or will his ability to remain fair and balanced when it comes to guns prove to be a positive for him?
  5. Was Fox out of line with his warning against Youngkin, you think?
  6. Would Virginia benefit from more Concealed-Carry (or Constitutional-Carry) laws?
  7. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
