On the Victory Channel’s UNCLASSIFIED, New York Times bestselling author and Messianic Rabbi Jonathan Cahn recounts a terrifying encounter aboard American Airlines Flight 618, where a seemingly ordinary conversation with a fellow first-class passenger escalated into a violent struggle at 30,000 feet, ultimately requiring other passengers to restrain the man with duct tape and forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Baltimore. Now the encounter is unclassified.
Cahn describes the incident in an interview with Unclassified on The Victory Channel as an experience that went far beyond the viral images of a passenger bound to his seat. The September 3 flight was traveling from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark when Cahn, who was seated beside the man, says the passenger initially appeared completely normal. The two began talking, eventually turning to matters of faith, Jesus and Cahn’s ministry. According to Cahn, the conversation changed dramatically when the subject turned toward Christianity.
Cahn says the passenger suddenly became hostile, began cursing and rejecting references to Jesus, and displayed behavior that Cahn interpreted as profoundly spiritual in nature, he told Unclassified. Cahn has repeatedly described the episode as “demonic,” making clear that this is his religious interpretation of what he experienced rather than a determination about the passenger’s condition or motives. He says the man’s behavior seemed to change abruptly, transforming an ordinary conversation into an increasingly threatening confrontation.
Unclassified Cahn Talks Victory
The unclassified situation eventually became physical as Cahn talks about victory. Cahn says the passenger attacked him and put his hands around his neck. During the struggle, the man also attempted to take or damage Cahn’s laptop, which Cahn was desperately trying to protect. Cahn describes wrestling with the passenger while the aircraft remained thousands of feet above the ground and the other passengers watched in shock, but victory was at hand.
The conflict did not end with Cahn escaping the immediate confrontation and victory not yet realized. Two passengers seated nearby, one of whom Cahn identified as a retired police officer, intervened after recognizing that the situation had become dangerous. The men attempted to restrain the passenger, but Cahn says he continued behaving violently. Flight attendants and passengers eventually used duct tape to secure him to his seat. Reports also indicate that zip ties were used as part of the restraint.
The pilot diverted the aircraft to Baltimore, where the plane landed and authorities boarded. Cahn says the FBI interviewed him and other witnesses after the emergency landing before the passenger was taken into custody. The passenger, identified in reporting as 67-year-old Arthur Layne Lundeen, subsequently faced Maryland charges of second-degree assault and disorderly conduct, with federal authorities also investigating.
For Cahn, however, the physical confrontation was only one part of the story. He believes the incident had a spiritual dimension connected to the conversation about Jesus and, potentially, to his ministry and his recently released book, The Altar of Pergamon. Cahn says he had already felt that he was facing an unusual spiritual attack before the flight and had asked others to pray for him.
Cahn also argues that the initial media coverage did not capture what he considers the central element of the incident: that he was the unidentified passenger directly involved in the confrontation. Early reports focused heavily on the passenger’s alleged use of racial and homophobic slurs and his disruptive behavior. Cahn contends that those accounts largely omitted the preceding conversation about faith and the physical attack against him. Independent reporting confirms that Cahn was the passenger seated beside Lundeen and that he was among those directly involved in the confrontation.
The interview therefore moves beyond the shocking image of a man duct-taped to an airplane seat. Cahn presents the episode as a firsthand account of violence, faith and what he understands as spiritual warfare unfolding in an extraordinarily confined setting. At the center of his account is a simple but unsettling sequence: a routine conversation at 30,000 feet, a sudden escalation, a physical attack, a desperate struggle, passengers intervening, duct tape becoming an improvised restraint, and an aircraft being diverted because the situation could no longer be contained.
For Cahn, the incident has become more than a bizarre aviation story. He sees it as an intensely personal encounter that reinforced his belief that spiritual battles can emerge in unexpected places—and that the viral images of the “duct-taped man” reveal only part of what happened aboard Flight 618.
