US Appeals Court Is Bringing Back a Lawsuit Involving Cisco Reportedly Helping Beijing In Persecuting Falun Gong

The Epoch Times’ Nan Su discusses how a California-based tech giant somehow got involved in the case – and what happens next.

Following a previous decision to dismiss the case way back in 2014, the U.S. Court of Appeals is moving forward with charges that involves one of the biggest California-based tech companies out there – as well as a foreign country.

Per this report from The Epoch Times, the case accuses Cisco of working alongside Beijing to violently persecute Falun Gong, a faith group that’s been the target of China since the late 90s.

Falun Gong filed a lawsuit against Cisco way back in 2011, including former executives John Chambers and Fredy Cheung. With it, they noted how the company supplied technology to aid communist officials with creating a better surveillance network that would help identify and track members of their group, along with facilitating their arrests and following torture.

Now, nearly a decade after its initial dismissal, the Appeals Court finds reason to move forward. “We conclude that Plaintiffs’ allegations, accepted as true, are sufficient to state a plausible claim that Cisco provided essential technical assistance to the ‘douzheng’ of Falun Gong with awareness that the international law violations of torture, arbitrary detention, disappearance, and extrajudicial killing were substantially likely to take place,” U.S. Circuit Judge Marsha Berzon noted in the story.

She also stated that the company’s actions constitute “aiding and abetting” the Chinese regime – a huge accusation, especially with the country being on uneasy terms with the United States.

This system, given the name “Golden Shield,” is a data-driven surveillance platform that is usable throughout China. But it also provided ongoing “skill training” and “technical training” so that Chinese agents could work more swiftly against Falun Gong – including utilizing the tech for torture means.

So what happens now? Joining us now is senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times, Nan Su. Nan is an expert in all things China, and his expertise on this matter should prove useful in this matter.
