What began as a friendly conversation between two strangers at 30,000 feet on American Airlines FLT 618, ended after an assault, with a passenger restrained in duct tape, an emergency landing, and a question that Jonathan Cahn says cannot be explained by the headlines alone. Cahn, who was literally on a trip home from promoting his book on its official release date when the passenger seated next to him assaulted him several times prior to being restrained before the plane made an emergency landing. The event happened on September 3, 2026, but Cahn’s role was not known until now.

The bestselling author and Messianic Jewish minister was flying from Dallas to Newark to after promoting his latest book, The Altar of Pergamon: The Mystery of the Dark Angel and the Future of the World, when he says a fellow passenger suddenly turned and assaulted him. In a video recounting the incident, Cahn describes the man as initially friendly and engaged, asking about his books and listening as Cahn shared his testimony and the Gospel. Then, Cahn says, everything changed. Violence and an assault occurred.
The passenger began cursing Jesus, directing fury at Cahn, and making threatening remarks. Cahn says the man assaulted him (even grabbing his throat) and struck his laptop, whose screen had already developed a mysterious dark patch earlier in the week. When Cahn attempted to move away with the computer, he says the passenger lunged at him and tried to seize it. The confrontation escalated into a physical struggle and assault that alarmed the entire plane and prompted the pilot to request an emergency landing.
Cahn says the man was eventually restrained by fellow passengers and flight attendants, with the plane landing in Baltimore. He also describes the passenger grabbing his previously injured left arm during the struggle, leaving it painfully reinjured after the assault.
But for Cahn, the incident and the assault was about more than an unruly passenger. He believes it was a vivid example of a spiritual conflict he has written about throughout his books: the idea that evil seeks to interrupt God’s purposes before they can come to pass.
Cahn says the timing was significant. His computer, which he uses to write books and conduct interviews, had malfunctioned just before the trip. Thousands of copies of The Altar of Pergamon had also been delayed by separate distributors around its release. Then, during the flight, the passenger’s hostility intensified after seeing the book’s cover.
Cahn is careful to distinguish the physical events from his spiritual interpretation. The passenger’s behavior, he says, was real and dangerous. But he believes the encounter also raises questions about the unseen forces behind the hostility directed at faith, the Gospel, and the purposes of God.
