Federal authorities charge Pastor with hosting ‘Underground Church’ during Covid Shutdown
Thanks to the U.S. Constitution, religious freedom has been considered a natural right not just in America, but all over the world. Today, however, from Europe to Canada to the United States, progressive and controversial values, along with an expanding police-state under the pandemic are being used against pastors, clergy, religious institutions, and individuals who believe their rights come from God and not government.
“Religious liberty took an alarming step backwards during the pandemic when churches and religious gathers were prohibited from being open to parishioners due to state and federal mandates.” Joe Dallas
Cancel culture is a threat to the First Amendment from speech to religious liberty. In the past few weeks news agencies are reporting on these stories:
- Alberta, Canada: authorities arrest Pastor Tim Stephens of Fairview Baptist Church, a second time on new charges for hosting ‘underground’ church services the past two weekends.
- Biden Administration abandons religious freedom as first among rights.
- IRS denies a religious group tax exempt status because “Bible teachings” are “affiliated with the Republican party”.
While the US Supreme Court unanimously upholds religious liberty for now, what’s next? The left and their mainstream institutions continue to characterize the religious convictions of millions of Americans has hateful or bigoted. A good example is the continued persecution of Colorado baker, Jack Phillips, for almost a decade.
Conversation Questions:
- Do you believe government is becoming more hostile to the Christian population? If so, how?
- Why do you believe any government would want to restrict religious freedom?
- How do you respond to people who say Christians are exaggerating when they claim they are being persecuted?
- What prompted you to write your book “Christians in a Cancel Culture?”
- If a church’s practices are somehow endangering the public, doesn’t the government have the right to shut them down?
