Thousands Protesting the Chinese Communist Party and Xi Jinping Over COVID-19 Curbs (Guest: Nan Su or Joshua Philipp)

A reporter from The Epoch Times discusses the dissent across at least ten major cities, with no signs of slowing down.

Two and a half years since it created a massive pandemic, COVID-19 continues to make waves, this time in China.

A new report from The Epoch Times indicates that various cities in China have become protest zones, with thousands flooding the streets of Shanghai and university campuses to protest curbs put in place due to COVID-19. Many believe that said curbs were the reason for 10 deaths and nine injuries in a high-rise apartment fire in Urumqi, though local authorities denied the story.

Many were calling for re-elected Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping to “Step down!”, while others demanded freedom from the many curbs surrounding the virus that has taken thousands of lives across the world.

Police have been trying to quell the crowds, but they continue to come out in massive numbers. Eva Rammeloo, a reporter for the Dutch newspaper Fidelity, even noted that she has “never seen anything like this” in all her years reporting in China.

Here to speak with us now is a reporter from The Epoch Times to discuss the protests further, as well as their effect and if anything further can come from them.

Q&A:

  1. What do you think is the reason for the rise in protests in China cities? Is it COVID, or could it just be general unrest about where things sit with Jinping and the CCP?
  2. Why do you believe China imposed these COVID curbs to begin with? Is it genuine concern for the spreading of the virus, or something else?
  3. President Joe Biden once stated a few weeks back that the “pandemic was over,” but it appears COVID continues to be a threat. Do you believe we’ll see it have even more presence in 2023, particularly in China?
  4. Do you believe anything will come from these protests? It doesn’t appear that Xi Jinping, the CCP or any local authorities have acknowledged them.
  5. Could the protests get worse before they get better? Is there a possibility that the military will get involved?
  6. What would you say the state of China is right now, as a whole? We believe that you actually have a documentary, The Final War, that takes a closer look at its actions over the years.
  7. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
