The US House of Representatives’ Tentative Ban On Assault Rifles Leaves a Number of Questions For Private Citizens (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

Just right before the weekend, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to ban assault weapons for the first time in decades, following arguments surrounding several active shooter events over the past few weeks.

The vote ended up being very close, going 217 to 213 with Democrats and some Republicans voting in favor of the bill. Now it’s a matter of seeing what kind of traction it makes within the Senate.

Despite the good intentions by those passing the bill, several groups have argued against it, stating that citizens have a right to bear arms and purchase said weapons without restrictions. Even though it’s likely to stall in Senate, the idea their rights could be infringed upon has left many in uproar.

Here to speak about the potential bill is Stephen Willeford. Stephen serves as a spokesman for Gun Owners of America. In 2017, he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is certainly welcome in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. As a spokesman for Gun Owners of America, what do you think the biggest problem is with the passing of this law? The infringement of rights for the American people, or perhaps something else?
  2. President Joe Biden and several Democrats within the House believe banning may be the answer – but could this potentially lead to more violence anyway, with the selling of illegal assault rifles?
  3. We’ve seen cases in the past where concealed-carry has proven to be quite effective against potential shooters. Do you believe the bill should take a focus more on this stance instead of an outright ban?
  4. What argument would you have against those who believe the banning of assault rifles is the “proper” way to stop active shooter events?
  5. If you were in charge of drafting a bill to slow the violence in this country, what steps would you take?
  6. Where can we learn more about you, as well as the Gun Owners of America?      a. My official website is http://www.stephenwilleford.com. You can read more about the Gun Owners of America at https://www.gunowners.org/.
