The House Is Pursuing Gun-Makers For Their Advertising, But Should That Really Be the Target? (Guest: Second Amendment)

Recently, a House investigation took place, revealing that gun manufacturers had sold more than $1 billion from selling AR-15 style guns over the past decade. In that investigation, The Committee on Oversight and Reform noted that some ads tying in with these gun sales were aiming at a certain demographic, set to put some buyers “at the top of the testosterone food chain.”

Democratic Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York called this advertising “deeply disturbing, exploitative and reckless,” noting that “in short, the gun industry is profiting off the blood of innocent Americans.”

That said, it seems that the House’s investigation has come into question by the general direction it’s taking, pointing out gun manufacturers that are trying to attract private gun collectors instead of taking more initiative over the certain few that have taken part in active shooter events over the past few months.

To discuss this in further detail – and the lack of the specific direction to crack down on active shooters – we’ve invited a spokesperson from the 2nd Amendment Foundation to provide their perspective on the matter.

Q&A:

  1. Do you believe The Committee on Oversight and Reform is overacting a bit when it comes to some of the advertising surrounding sold weapons, especially considering that other companies seem to follow similar tactics with their products?
  2. This seems to tie in with President Biden’s attempts to get assault rifle-style weapons banned as a whole. Do you believe it’s a fair investigation when it comes to private citizens who buy these weapons?
  3. A previous investigation called for manufacturers of auto sears to come into questions, which can modify weapons for more firing efficiency. Should this be the focus of such investigation, rather than advertising? If not, what do you think they should be taking a closer look at?
  4. Carolyn Maloney noted that “the gun industry is profiting off the blood of innocent Americans.” Is this a fair statement, or biased?
  5. If you were in charge of such a Committee, what would you be taking a closer look at when it comes to trying to stop the active shooter events taking place in this country?
  6. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
  7. Those interested can visit http://www.saf.org/.
