The Supreme Court Just Handed a Major Win To Private Gun Owners By Knocking Down the Federal Ban on Bump Stocks (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

The Gun Owners of America spokesman explains why the ban wasn’t necessary to begin with.

The Supreme Court has handed another major win to the gun community – and at a crucial time, if that.

It recently knocked down a federal ban on bump stocks, one that’s been in place since 2017. Former President Donald Trump initially put the ban into place following a mass shooting in Las Vegas that left 58 people dead.

So why the reversal? Justice Clarence Thomas explained it in a statement. “A bump stock does not convert a semiautomatic rifle into a machinegun any more than a shooter with a lightning-fast trigger finger does. Even with a bump stock, a semiautomatic rifle will fire only one shot for every ‘function of the trigger.’”

At a time when many local governments are trying to implement whatever bans they can on private gun owners and licensed types that practice concealed-carry, this does serve as a victory. But the question is what comes next?

Joining us now to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, the spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall Willeford being the “hero with a gun” with the Sutherland Springs situation in 2017, in which he’s co-authored a book. His expertise on gun rights make him an ideal interviewee for this subject.

Q&A:

  1. Why is the Supreme Court lifting a ban on bump stocks such a win for private gun owners and supporters of the Second Amendment?
  2. Should such a ban have been put into place to begin with? Especially with Thomas’ statement discussing the firing time on a weapon?
  3. What purpose does a bump stock serve, for those that are looking for more clarification?
  4. With the federal ban on bump stocks being knocked down, could the Biden Administration or ATF possibly come up with something new to ban or prohibit?
  5. We also understand a recent ruling was also made on pistol braces. Can you tell us more about that?
  6. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  7. Where can people find your book?
    1. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  8. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
    1. You can learn more at http://www.thebarefootdefender.com. You can also read more about the Gun Owners of America at https://www.gunowners.org/.
