The Supreme Court Has Ruled In Favor of a Web Designer That Won’t Make Gay Wedding Sites – And, Despite What Critics Say, It’s the Right Move

Michael Lee Mason explains why freedom of choice reigns supreme when it comes to how businesses operate.

At a time when people are trying to dictate who or what sort of messages they should be hearing or following, the Supreme Court has ruled loud and clear when it comes to a person’s right to choose how they operate a business.

The Court’s conservative majority ruled earlier today that a Christian graphic artist that works on wedding websites has the right to refuse to work with same sex couples.

Though many criticized the decision because of gay rights, the ruling notes that the First Amendment stops Colorado from forcing “an individual to speak in ways that align with its views but defy her conscience about a matter of major significance.” In other words, a business owner can decide who to do business with.

“The First Amendment envisions the United States as a rich and complex place where all persons are free to think and speak as they wish, not as the government demands,” Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote.

Though some believe the Supreme Court decision could devolve into discrimination against others based on race, sex, or other innate human characteristics, the high court is simply trying to uphold freedom of choice – something people should still have, even if they’re business owners serving the public.
