The Repealing of the Veteran Gun Ban Would Be a Huge Win For the Rights of Gun Owners (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford explains why this would be a huge win – and a strong start to the new year.

The Veteran Affairs appropriations bill, or H.R. 4366 as it’s known in some parts, has gone through quite a bit of changes. But one notable one that would be a win for gun rights groups is the repealing of the Veteran Gun Ban.

As part of this act, many bureaucrats – namely anti-gun Democrats – managed to label hard-working veterans as “mentally defective,” hence taking away their rights to purchase a firearm. For the rest of their lives.

This clearly removes their right to bear arms, a right provided by the Second Amendment of the Constitution.

But there is good news. Despite the work by these bureaucrats, the gun ban is on the verge of being repealed, with both the House and Senate passing bipartisan amendments to the bill.

The Gun Owners of America played a bit part in this near victory, and joining us now to discuss its importance – now more than ever – is spokesman Stephen Willeford. You may recall him as the “hero with a gun” in the 2017 Sutherland Springs incident, which he has since co-written a book about.

We welcome Willeford to the show.

Q&A:

  1. So, what prompted these bureaucrats to label veterans as “mentally defective” to begin with? Is this labeling done in the worst way possible?
  2. Do you believe these people are taking away the rights of veterans that are simply trying to keep themselves safe in these changing times?
  3. Both the Senate and the House have made their moves to get the Veteran Gun Ban repealed. What do you believe is the final effort needed to put it to rest once and for all?
  4. If the ban is completed, could anti-gun Democrats find a new way to take guns away from veterans? Or will they simply move on to another initiative?
  5. Where do you see the discussion surrounding gun rights going with the 2024 Presidential Election?
  6. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  7. Where can people find your book?
    1. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  8. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
    1. You can learn more at http://www.thebarefootdefender.com. You can also read more about the Gun Owners of America at https://www.gunowners.org/.
