Law enforcement veteran Michael Letts discusses the quick action by the Nashville Police, and what should happen next to prevent “active shooter” events in the future.
2023 has already seen its fair share of “active shooter” events; and just about three months in, they show no signs of stopping.
A 28-year old suspect shot and killed three children and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville, before police were able to successfully shoot and kill the assailant before any further lives were lost.
Based on body cam footage released to the public, Nashville police acted swiftly and professionally to take down the suspect. But even with their quick action, residents are left asking if something could have been done to stop the shooter, especially with their forewarning to a local Nashville radio station (saying “something bad was going to happen”) and mapping out their actions prior to the attack.
With us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with 30 years of experience under his belt. Michael is president, founder and CEO of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. His expertise will certainly prove useful in this matter.
Q&A:
- It’s horrible what took place in Nashville earlier this week, with six lives being lost. But the police acted very quickly to subdue the suspect before any more lives were taken. Is there anything you want to say about the Nashville police and how quickly they reacted?
- With the lessons learned from the previous “active shooter” event in Uvalde, would you say the police have laid out better plans in terms of how to stop these shooters before they can take more lives? Not to mention their quick response time?
- The suspect reportedly mapped out spots in the school to follow, as well as utilizing surveillance video. Do you think there was any way, with the right tools, police could’ve seen what they were up to and stopped the attack? Or was there just any way to tell?
- Do you believe schools such as this should have some form of police officer or even Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed-Carry) citizen, just in case something like this should arise again? Or do you believe too many people would argue this is unsafe as well?
- What do you think is the best solution when it comes to stopping “active shooter” events such as this? Or is there an easy solution to come by?
