The Ol’ Switcheroo: Trump’s Changing of Stance In Guns Brings Up Questions (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

The spokesman for the Gun Owners of America discusses the President’s recent flip-flop following the shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.

In the past, President Donald Trump had made it clear that he was supporting pro-gun advocates and gun groups, even approving the opening of a new civil rights office late last year to help support cases surrounding it. But lately, it seems he’s taking a much different stance.

Just days after the death of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis at the hands of ICE agents, Trump noted during a recent press conference that Pretti shouldn’t have approached government agents with a firearm – despite his license to open carry. “You can’t have guns. You can’t walk in with guns,” he said.

This sounds like a complete change of course from what he said prior about open carry support. That said, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that Trump still has their back, despite recent statements.

“The President supports the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding American citizens, absolutely,” she said. But she also made it clear that “when you are bearing arms and confronted by law enforcement, you are raising…the risk of force being used against you.” And keep in mind, this apparently includes those that have gone through training and actually have a license to carry within the 29 states that currently allow it.

While the fallout continues in Minneapolis, questions are raised about where Trump truly stands with gun owners – and that could have a dangerous effect on mid-term elections. So what happens now?

Joining us to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, the 2017 “hero with a gun” who serves as spokesman for the group. We welcome him to the show.

Q&A:

  1. What do you think about the President’s newfound stance on open-carry citizens following what took place in Minneapolis over the weekend?
  2. Could this potentially wreak havoc on his previous support for pro-gun advocates and groups? Is there a possibility that this could affect his fellow Republicans in mid-terms?
  3. Do you believe Leavitt is wrong when it came to “raising…the risk of force being used against you” if you’re an open-carry citizen being approached by law enforcement?
  4. Where do you personally stand on what happened with Pretti? Seeing as he had an open-carry license, he should’ve been allowed to carry a firearm, correct?
  5. How will this affect Trump in the long run? And, for that matter, will this have any effect on his newly opened civil rights office if he continues down this road?
  6. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  7. Where can people find your book?
  8. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  9. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
