NYT Hearts CCP (Guest: Levi Browde or Leeshai Lemish)

America’s Paper of Record Releases ANOTHER Hit Piece on Shen Yun Dancers to the Benefit of The Chinese Communists

A spokesperson for the group explains why the article’s claims about the group making money off “religious fervor” are ridiculous.

The New York Times continues to aid and abet the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with libelous smears against the Shen Yun dance group. In the latest hit piece, printed on December 29th, the Times focuses on the increase in revenue within Shen Yun, as if it’s a bad thing. In reality, any increase in revenue is a direct reflection of the rise in the group’s popularity.

That, perhaps more than anything else, underscores why the CCP so desperately needs to increase its attacks on Shen Yun. The dance group seeks to further ancient Chinese culture through dance and faith. Yet, the CCP has forbidden its very existence within China, while using outlets like the New York Times to smear Shen Yun by saying it’s exploiting its workers.

Not only is that untrue, says Levi Browde, Executive Director of the Falun Dafa Information Center, “It’s the worst form of projection for the CCP to point to other groups as mistreating people,” he said. Browde’s organization seeks to call attention to the human rights abuses by the CCP against the Falun Gong, of which Shen Yun is a part.

The New York Times are no stranger to attacking Shen Yun, the popular touring event that celebrates all things in Chinese culture. But it’s now published another piece, insisting that the group has made scrupulous amounts of money through “religious fervor.”

In the piece, the author explains how “the dance group has accumulated enormous wealth, in large part by getting followers of the Falun Gong religious movement to work for free and pay its bills.”

It’s yet another piece that libels the touring showcase, which has long been under attack by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) because of the involvement of Falun Gong. But many fail to see what the show really is – a loving tribute to all things China.

A spokesperson for the group joins us now to discuss the matter further. We welcome them to the show!

Q&A:

  1. Why do you think the New York Times has such a grudge against Shen Yun? This seems to be the latest in a long string of articles slamming the showcase.
  2. Could they potentially have ties with the Chinese Communist Party, who have been trying to slander Shen Yun for a great while now?
  3. What about their statements that Falun Gong is using “religious fervor” to get millions of dollars?
  4. What about the statement that those within Falun Gong are working “for free” on the show?
  5. Shen Yun has attained a great deal of popularity over the past year, despite the ongoing controversies. What does the show have in store for the new year?
  6. Where can we learn more about the beautiful art of Shen Yun, and how it motivates others?

FROM FALUN DAFA INFORMATION CENTER

Levi Browde serves as the Executive Director with the New York-based Falun Dafa Information Center – an organization dedicated to ending the human rights abuses against people who practice Falun Gong in China.

A career software entrepreneur, Levi’s life changed dramatically in 1999 when his best friend came to the office one morning and announced the Chinese Communist Party had taken away his mother in Beijing to be tortured and “brainwashed.” This marked the beginning of his volunteer work to defend human rights in China. Two years later, Levi himself was detained in a Chinese jail outside Beijing for secretly meeting with Western reporters and protesting on Tiananmen Square.

Over the past 20 years, Browde has been interviewed and quoted by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, CNN, the Associated Press, TIME Magazine, BBC, AFP, and other media outlets. He has spoken about Falun Gong and human rights in China at briefings on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, at the United Nations human rights sessions in Geneva, Switzerland.

Browde studied East Asian Studies at Wesleyan University and is an avid supporter of traditional Chinese culture. He founded several software start-ups, and lives in New York with his wife and two sons.
