The New Epoch Times Documentary Gotaways Takes a Deep Dive Into the Hidden Border Crisis (Guest: Kay Rubacek)

Producer and editor Kay Rubacek discusses the startling new film, which takes a closer look at what’s been happening at the Southern border.

There’s a storm brewing at our border, as thousands of immigrants attempt to make their way into the United States. But little do people realize just how many “got away” when it came to getting into our country.

The new Epoch Times documentary Gotaways: The Hidden Border Crisis takes a closer look at this. Spanning the course of two years, the film, directed and produced by Charlotte Cuthbertson, examines the 1.7 million “gotaways” that managed to evade capture by the Border Patrol, under the “watchful eye” of the Biden administration.

“The Epoch Original documentary Gotaways: The Hidden Border Crisis takes you to a small border county in Texas to show you the impact of the gotaways on local ranchers, law enforcement, and life in a small county. Gotaways is the first documentary of its kind, a high-energy, fast-paced, front-row seat inside the biggest border crisis in America’s history from the local perspective. Through exclusive footage and interviews with law enforcement and local ranchers, learn what it’s really like to live on the southern border and how the crisis ultimately affects all of America,” the official description reads.

For the documentary, Cuthbertson moved to a small border county in Texas in 2021 and interviewed the sheriff, county attorney, EMS director, school superintendent, a former Border Patrol chief, and border ranchers to understand the impact and flow of the gotaways.

It’s an eye opening look at what’s happening at the border, and how immigrants are able to make their way into such cities as New York and Chicago. And it comes at just the right time, as 72 percent of Americans believe there is a genuine crisis at the border, one that they’re hoping there will be a proper solution to.

Joining us now to discuss Gotaways further is Kay Rubacek, producer and editor of the film. Her experience in seeing what happened and how it affects modern Americans will provide further insight into it.

Q&A:

  1. First off, what prompted the team at The Epoch Times to explore this topic further? Biden’s ignorance towards the border? Or something else?
  2. Isn’t it a bit concerning that 1.7 million “gotaways” have managed to slip into our country unnoticed, and when immigrants are found, the blame seems to be passed elsewhere for their existence?
  3. How bad would you say the immigrant problem is within the United States at this moment in time?
  4. Is there any way for the Biden administration to possibly keep “gotaways” from slipping through at the Border? Or would that actually require more attention on his part?
  5. Where do you see this Border crisis going as 2024 approaches? Could it play a big part in the forthcoming Presidential election?
  6. One interesting aspect to Gotaways is how American citizens are attempting to help these immigrants, only to end up being caught and secured for human smuggling. What is causing them to do this? Cash incentives? Something else?
  7. We understand that Charlotte just won the Best First Time Director award for Gotaways at the Oniros New York Film Festival. How does this make you feel about the film as a whole?
  8. What do you think viewers will take away from the film?
  9. Where can we learn more about Gotaways, as well as you in general?

A. The film’s official website is http://www.gotawaysfilm.com, and you can learn more about me on my official website at https://kayrubacek.com.

  1. Where is the film available for viewing?
    1. You can view it right here on Epoch TV.
