The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms explains why this new legislation is on the same level as a “literacy test” – and totally unnecessary.
In an effort to curb gun violence happening within the state, Washington Democrat Governor Jay Inslee has passed new legislation that requires gun buyers to provide some piece of proof indicating they’ve taken a firearms training course before being allowed to complete their purchase.
While Inslee sees this as a step in safety, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) believes it’s a violation of the rights of gun owners.
Chairman Alan Gottlieb noted that it’s about on the same level as a literacy test. “We’re talking about rights in both cases,” he said. “For Jay Inslee or any other Democrat to contend ‘this is different’ suggests they’re either dishonest or delusional, and perhaps a little bit of both.”
The bill, dubbed House Bill 1143, is part of a movement by Democrats in Washington to continue to push restrictive gun laws. This is even with the state Constitution stating, “The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself, or the state, shall not be impaired.”
“Inslee and the Democrats can couch this any way they want,” Gottlieb added, “but it adds up to the same thing. These requirements are designed to discourage Evergreen State citizens from exercising their constitutionally-protected and enumerated rights.
“Democrats in the Legislature are not only at war with Washington gun owners. They have also declared war on the state and federal constitutions, and the built-in protections for law-abiding firearms owners. As we’ve said many times, this isn’t about guns, it’s about rights.”
A representative for the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms joins us now to discuss the matter further.
Q&A:
- Why are Democrats so driven to pass such a restrictive gun law in the state of Washington?
- Do you believe the legislation will be knocked down, considering that the Constitution clearly allows citizens the right to bear arms?
- Could the 10-day waiting period be somewhat troublesome, especially for family members that are merely trying to protect their own?
- What is the next move by the CCRKBA in an effort to knock down this legislation?
- Where can we learn more about the CCRKBA and how people can support it?
