The Justice Department Will Open New Office This Week Devoted To Gun-Rights Protections (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

The spokesman for the Gun Owners of America discusses the new office, but also what more could be done to affirm the rights of private gun owners.

Even though some states feel the need to limit the gun rights of private gun owners, the Justice Department is taking action to assure that they’re not violated with a special office of their own.

A gun-rights protections office is set to open this week – December 4th – as part of its civil rights division. The mission of the office will be to enforce the U.S. constitutional right to bear arms, according to Reuters. It will officially be known as the Second Amendment Rights Section.

This follows President Donald Trump’s executive order signed earlier this year to assure that directing Attorney General Pam Bondi would check through the U.S. government to “assess any ongoing infringements” of gun rights. Whether this will affect what local cities are doing with their laws is unclear.

“The Civil Rights Division’s new focus on the Second Amendment, which is far outside its longstanding mission, is moving us even further away from our nation’s commitment to protecting all Americans’ civil rights,” said Stacey Young, a former Civil Rights Division attorney.

That said, there is some question as to what the Department of Justice can do further to protect gun rights, including working to get Representative Richard Hudson’s H.R. 38, or the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2025, approved.

Joining us now is Stephen Willeford, the “Hero With a Gun” who serves as spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. We welcome him to the show!
