Founder of Reconnecting Ministries Grant Berry discusses HB 187, which could put a definition of anti-Semitism into state law.
In the midst of the ongoing Israel/Hamas war, the Florida House is looking at a bill this week that could put a definition of anti-Semitism into the state’s laws. With HB 187, legislation would be introduced to provide “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred towards Jews” and rhetorical and manifestations “directed towards Jewish or non-Jewish individuals, their property, community institutions and religious facilities.”
However, in a recent vote, it came back with some surprise opposition from a Democratic colleague, who noted. He noted that “this bill provides, basically, guardrails as to what is antisemitic hate speech and creates a protocol of sort to follow.” He feels that such an approach would be “problematic.”
