The Co-Writers/Directors of Running the Bases Discuss Christianity Possibly Becoming a Minority Group – and How Their Movie Can Help Keep the Faith (Guests: Jimmy Womble and Marty Roberts)

Marty Roberts and Jimmy Womble discuss the ongoing debate about the religion losing its momentum.

At this moment in time, a strong number of Americans believe in Christianity. But a new report suggests that this could change over the next few decades.

This comes from a Pew Research study which indicates that U.S. Christians could see a drop as low as 35 percent by 2070.

The number has already seen a bit of a drop since the 1950s, when the number of Christians in America were around 90 percent. That number currently sits at 64 percent.

Stephanie Kramer, who works with Pew as a senior researcher, explained, “The biggest factor in switching and especially switching out of Christianity to become unaffiliated. We’re talking about people who are raised Christian and now identify as atheists agnostic or nothing in particular. That’s where most of the movement is.”

But what can help restore this faith for those that may have lost it? With us now are Jimmy Womble and (or) Marty Roberts, who serve as co-directors and co-writers for the new film Running the Bases. The film follows a high school baseball coach in transition to a new city, where he finds his faith in Christianity tested. They should provide the right kind of expertise to discuss this topic.

Q&A:

  1. What do you think about the statistics showing a loss in Christians in the United States from the 50s to now? Do you believe there’s a strong possibility that the number could drop further?
  2. Why do you think people lose their faith in Christianity? Could it be outside peer pressure, or problems currently happening in the world, or perhaps something else?
  3. Your film, Running the Bases, tells a story of a high school baseball coach who finds himself at odds with those that don’t understand his faith in Christianity. What motivated you to write this story and get it made into a movie?
  4. Do you think your movie tells the kind of inspirational tale that will help people believe again? Or, at the very least, find comfort in believing in Christianity?
  5. Pastor Chris Pryor noted that if America continues to stray from Christianity, America could very well “lose its soul.” Do you believe the situation is that dire, or could he possibly be onto something with his concern?
  6. Tell us more about Running the Bases, and the journey you took to get it made.
  7. Where can people learn more about the film and where they’ll be able to see it?
    1. You can watch the trailer and visit runningthebasesmovie.com to find out where the movie is playing near you.
