Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford explains how the ruling could hurt a lot of citizens, even those that aren’t considered a threat.
Rather than setting up regulations that would actually keep Americans safe, President Joe Biden, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), have put their ruling into effect surrounding guns with stabilizing braces. With it, those that own said braces must officially register, or risk being considered a felon.
As expected, the passing of said regulation has left quite a rift in the private gun owner community. Only 250,000 owners have complied with the ATF; and the Gun Owners of America filed a lawsuit, in which a federal judge in Texas has ruled that GOA members – along with Texas citizens – are exempt.
But that’s minor compared to how the rest of the country is affected; and gun groups everywhere aren’t backing down, arguing how the ruling surrounding gun braces vehemently goes against the Second Amendment. It’ll be interesting to see where the battle goes in the weeks ahead.
Joining us now to talk further about this victory is Stephen Willeford, the spokesman for Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise in all things gun ownership is welcome in this matter.
Q&A:
- Why do you believe Biden was working so closely with the ATF to pass this regulation against pistol braces, despite the Second Amendment giving everyone the right to bear arms?
- Does it surprise you how quickly the Texas judge overturned the regulation, especially with lawsuits from Gun Owners of America and others over its legal implications?
- Do you believe other gun groups will follow suit as well, with lawsuits indicating that the Second Amendment provides them protection?
- Why do you believe Biden is going more for a solution such as this instead of considering the effectiveness of Constitutional Carry (or Concealed Carry, as some call it)? Is he worried about more guns being out there as a result?
- Do you believe Biden has any sort of legal case to stand on if the ATF does start calling out private gun owners as felons for refusing to register their pistol braces?
- Where do you see the battle for guns going in the months ahead? Do you believe Biden will continue to try to make movement on his “assault weapons” ban?
- You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how you put it together.
