Elephant in the State (Guest: Leigh Wambsganss)

Texas Forced to Confront Downstream Illegal Immigration Issues

It’s counterintuitive, but across the country, states are grappling with the issue of illegal immigration, regardless of their stance on it. Elected officials, whether in support of or opposed to illegal immigration, are now facing the consequences of both action and inaction.

In Texas, the influx of illegal aliens has reached such a level that the Governor had to sign an executive order requiring hospitals to collect information on all illegal immigrants who seek care. This policy not only adds layers of bureaucracy that hospitals shouldn’t have to manage (because these illegals shouldn’t be in the country) but also risks compromising the quality of care available to American citizens. Hospitals, already stretched thin, are now burdened with additional responsibilities that distract from their primary mission: providing patient care.

The intention behind this new policy is to gather data to better understand how illegal immigration impacts American taxpayers. While this goal is valid, the approach fails to address the underlying, upstream problem. There’s already a wealth of data available; what people really want is action.

Meanwhile, New York City is treating its undocumented residents like hot potatoes, sending them back to Texas on planes and buses. The irony is striking. New York City positions itself as a sanctuary city while simultaneously expelling immigrants to a state that has already sent them there.

These back-and-forth highlights the complexities of immigration policy and the need for cohesive solutions.

She can provide insights into the policy failures, the real impacts on communities, and potential pathways forward that respect both the rule of law and humanitarian concerns.
