A Second Amendment representative discusses a new report as to why certain states are still pressing for strict gun laws, despite little effect from them.
Despite the protection of the Second Amendment in the Constitution, it appears some states are still determined to keep strict gun laws in place.
A new report filed by Newsweek revealed a map that showed which states have the strictest gun laws. This comes on the heels of U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy proclaiming that gun violence has become a public health crisis.
According to the report, states like California, New Jersey, New York and Colorado have the strictest gun laws in place, while Wyoming, Arkansas, Mississippi and Arizona are on the opposite end of the spectrum.
While some praise the idea of gun violence being a “health crisis,” a look at the interactive map reveals that states that actually have strict gun laws appear to have nearly similar murder numbers (per 100,000 people) as those with laws that follow the Second Amendment – indicating their lack of effectiveness.
Though gun violence is certainly an issue, this chart indicates that putting up gun bans or restrictions isn’t the answer, especially when an option for concealed carry is on the table. Some states are reporting that having those that are licensed for concealed carry actually provide a better sense of safety.
A representative for the Second Amendment Foundation joins us now to discuss the matter further. They believe in the right for all citizens to keep and bear arms, as noted by the Second Amendment itself.
Q&A:
- What do you think about Surgeon General Murthy’s statement about gun violence being a “public health crisis”?
- Is it any surprise that states with the strictest gun laws agree with Murthy’s statement, rather than actually taking a closer look at the research?
- Why is it that states with more relaxed gun laws seem to have a similar incident rate to those that have strict gun laws?
- More than half of the United States currently has laws that support the Second Amendment and the right for people to bear arms. Could we see more states possibly swing that way as 2024 continues on? Or will they likely stick by their beliefs?
- How much of a factor will guns play when it comes to the Presidential Debate?
- Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation?
