A physician chimes in on why many people are taking the Pandemic seriously.
With the death toll now doubling in the US and the number of cases of COVID 19 escalating, there are some individuals who are acting like nothing is happening. Surgeon General, Jerome Adams notes that there are still individuals who are in a la-la land of denial.
Q: Doctor, help us distinguish between the hype and reality? How bad are things going to get?
A: First of all, let’s remember these are uncharted waters. No one really knows exactly how bad its going to get. Extrapolating from Italy, the Surgeon General is correct. Things are going to get worse before they get better.
Q: Doctor, why do you think people taking the COVID-19 epidemic seriously?
A: The virus probably hasn’t affected someone they know or love. YET. Let’s do the math. Based on conservative studies most people have active relationships with about 150 people. Knowing the mortality of the virus that would mean every person would know about 5 people who die in this pandemic.
Q: Doctor, tell us, what do say to those individuals are behaving like nothing is happening?
A: First of all, let’s keep this in mind. If you are healthy, it’s not about you.
Q: Doctor, how has the virus affected you personally?
A: As a private practice physician and surgeon, I run my own small business. If we can keep the doors open long enough, I think the bust will eventually turn back into a boom. Right now, we’re making all kinds of adjustments to keep people safe.
Q: Doctor, are you hopeful? And what can you tell us about the Malaria medicine, Chloroquine that is touted as a treatment for COVID-19?
A: Yes. I just took it for the last month on my trip to Africa. Chloroquine competes with the same proteins which the COVID-19. Hydroxychloroquine was effective on its own in reducing the effect of the virus, but when given in combination with Azithromycin the effectiveness doubled.
