Attorney Mike Hammond is available to interview by phone (Eastern Time)
The United States Supreme Court agreed to hear the first gun-related case in over a decade. This case, NY State Rifle & Pistol Assoc. v. Corlett, concerns New York’s restrictive “may issue” permitting system, which establishes onerous and near unattainable standards to bear arms outside the home in the Empire State.
Mike Hammond, chief legislative counsel for Gun Owners of America joins us to discuss this landmark case for 2nd Amendment rights.
- Gun Owners of America just posted this tweet “Gun owners are delighted to hear that #SCOTUS has decided to take up another 2A case.” Can you elaborate on that?
- Your Gun Owners group says it hopes the Supreme Court will use “the 2nd Amendment as their guide and strike down infringing ‘may issue’ permitting systems.” Tell us more.
- Aidan Johnston, Director of Federal Affairs for Gun Owners of America , celebrated SCOTUS taking up the gun rights case by tweeting: “SHALL. NOT. BE. INFRINGED.” What shall not be infringed?
- Jordan Stein, GOA’s Director of Communications, emphasized the importance of the case, tweeting: “This is a big deal. SCOTUS must … strike down so-called ‘may issue’ carry permitting systems.” What would a high court victory look like if achieved?
- Senior Vice President of Gun Owners of America (GOA) and Gun Owners Foundation (GOF), Rich Pratt stated: The Supreme Court has “kicked the can” on the Second Amendment for far too long. The time has come for the Court to stand for the Constitution and Bill of Rights and strike down onerous “may issue” carry restrictions. To ensure that the “text and history” — as outlined in the Heller case — is heard before the Court, GOA and GOF will be filing an amicus brief in this case.
- Where may we get more information on this case and Gun Owners of America? Answer: GunOwners.org
