Strait Up Threats at Straits; Expert Explains

Strait and Narrow: IRGC Puts Two Choke Points on Notice as Israel Keeps Fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon

As Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warns that continued Israeli operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza could lead to disruptions in both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb, a strait even narrower than Hormuz. President and founder of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund, David Rubin says the threat demonstrates how Tehran weaponizes global commerce to protect its terrorist proxies. Rubin knows more than a little bit about the politics of the region. He was the mayor of Shiloh at one time and resides in Israel.

  • Iran links diplomacy directly to Hezbollah’s battlefield fortunes; willing to go strait to battle
  • Hezbollah remains Tehran’s most important regional proxy force.
  • Peace talks collapse as tensions escalate across the region and two narrow straits.
  • Negotiations cannot be separated from Iran’s proxy network.
  • Regional instability threatens broader American strategic interests.

Iranian officials have suggested that continued military pressure on Hezbollah and Hamas could trigger consequences in the Strait of Hormuz and an even narrower strait, known as Bab el-Mandeb, two of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global energy supplies and commercial shipping transit.

Rubin argues that Iran’s latest warning is an admission that the regime views Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and other proxy groups as components of a single strategic network. According to Rubin, whenever one part of that network comes under pressure, Tehran attempts to expand the conflict by threatening international trade routes, energy supplies, and economic stability far beyond the Middle East by interfering in straits.

Having survived a terrorist ambush that nearly claimed his life and severely wounded his young son, Rubin has spent decades studying the ideology and tactics of Iranian-backed extremist organizations. He contends that the latest threats involving Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb expose the true nature of the regime’s regional strategy: using proxy warfare and economic coercion simultaneously to achieve political objectives.

Rubin can discuss why Hezbollah’s battlefield fortunes are so important to Tehran, how the Houthis fit into Iran’s broader regional architecture (strait known as Bab el-Mandeb), and why threats against global shipping lanes should be viewed as an extension of the same conflict playing out in Lebanon and Gaza. He can also explain the potential economic consequences if either maritime chokepoint faces renewed disruptions, including impacts on energy prices, supply chains, inflation, and global markets. Iranian officials and allied groups have repeatedly linked military developments in Lebanon and Gaza to potential action affecting regional shipping routes.

As founder of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund and a longtime commentator on Middle East affairs, Rubin offers a unique perspective on the intersection of terrorism, geopolitics, and economic warfare—and why the battle against Iranian-backed proxies may have consequences reaching far beyond Israel’s borders.
