Stopping the Red Flag Bill (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford explains why Michigan gun owners should pay very close attention to a bill making the rounds in their state.

It seems that every day, particular states find a way to try and strip precious Second Amendment rights from its citizens. Today, it appears to be Michigan’s turn.

According to the Gun Owners of America, a recent hearing took place surrounding Senate Bill 111. It focuses on what it calls an “elder and vulnerable adult personal protection order” when it comes to guns. However, the group can see right through this, as it actually “circumvents due process and strips away Second Amendment rights.”

The group notes, “In simple terms this is a Red Flag law, and we know they are a dangerous infringement on due process and the Second Amendment, allowing the government to strip individuals of their firearms based on unverified accusations rather than concrete evidence or a criminal conviction.”

That means removing firearms from the hands of citizens simply trying to defend themselves, without being able to properly fight for their rights with any sort of trial. It’s the wrong kind of finger-pointing…and the fact it’s coming from those within the state is disturbing.

Joining us now to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, who currently serves as spokesman for the GOA. Stephen is the “hero with a gun” from the Sutherland Springs incident in 2017, which he has since co-written a book about. We welcome him to the show!

Q&A:

  1. Why do states continue to try to come up with laws that hamper or straight up take away the Second Amendment rights of U.S. citizens? Are they really that concerned with gun violence?
  2. What would you say is the biggest problem with SB 111 in terms of how it’s put together?
  3. Could this actually have a harmful effect if other states considered such a Senate bill as well?
  4. What can concerned citizens do to sound off against this dangerous bill?
  5. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
