Shortage of Baby Formula Continues To Be a Big Problem For Mothers Across the United States  (Guest: Jim Harden)

Despite the best efforts of President Joe Biden and his administration, a shortage of baby formula is hitting newborn mothers hard across the United States.

A new report from market research firm IRI confirms that 28.3 percent of powdered baby formula products were out of stock in U.S. stores this past week. That’s an increase from the 23.7 percent reported back in May. In addition, consumers are only buying an average of 11 different formula products weekly, compared to the 24 they were able to buy in the years before.

KK Davey, the president of client engagement for IRI, noted that this is mainly due to hoarding by consumers, although manufacturers prioritizing certain formula packs and packaging for the expense of others also plays a part. “People have swung a bit more to (formula packs) less than 16 ounces in the past four to six weeks, and that is a swing from larger packs before.”

President Biden had been attempting to work with the Pentagon to fly in fresh supplies in an effort to meet demand, but it appears that it isn’t enough.

Joining us now to discuss this situation is Rev. James Harden, M. Div., who serves as the CEO of CompassCare Pregnancy Services. He also pioneered the first measurable and repeatable medical model in the pregnancy center movement.

Q&A:

  1. How much of a problem does the lack of available formula pose for new mothers and those trying to take care of their kids?
  2. Why do you think President Biden is falling so far behind in trying to provide fresh formula for those who need it?
  3. What about the issue that only certain types of formula are available in certain parts of the country? Could these corporations be getting too selective with distribution, or is it something else?
  4. Do you see the problem getting worse in the months ahead if enough supply isn’t provided to meet with demand?
  5. What advice do you have for young mothers that need to get their hands on this necessary formula?
  6. Where can we learn more about CompassCare and its services?
