That year, Engel had already built and sold a successful ultrasound company when she accompanied a friend and a local police chief to Washington State’s San Juan Islands. What began as a seemingly routine excursion quickly turned into an experience she has never forgotten.

After taking a ferry to one of the islands, Engel was brought to an enormous, luxurious waterfront estate. Initially empty, the property soon became the destination for multiple seaplanes arriving from across the region. According to Engel, the aircraft were piloted by individuals connected to the Iran-Contra operation. Among the passengers arriving that evening was both Jeffrey Epstein and his brother, Mark Epstein.

As the gathering unfolded, Engel sensed something was deeply wrong. Concerned she might be drugged; she refused all food and drinks throughout the evening. She says both Epstein brothers kept her close throughout the event, engaging her in extensive conversations about technology, business, and future plans.

One discussion in particular stands out. Engel says Jeffrey Epstein described his interest in purchasing what would later become his notorious private island. He allegedly explained that the property would host heads of state and other powerful figures and sought her expertise in ultrasound technology. Epstein proposed hiring Engel to conceal sensitive data within medical imaging signals, allowing information to be hidden and transported without detection. After she explained that such a concept was theoretically possible, Epstein immediately offered her a position and even proposed gifting her the lavish island estate.

Engel declined. Beyond her growing discomfort with the entire arrangement, she was engaged in a child-custody battle and unwilling to accept a role that would require extensive international travel.

Today, Engel believes those conversations offer a rare glimpse into Epstein’s ambitions years before the world learned his name. She also contends that Epstein intended to model his island operation on the exclusive Cuba-based social clubs of the 1950s, including what became known as the Quorum Club and later the One Hundred Sixteen Club.

Now the author of “Sparky: Surviving Sex Magick,” Engel is available to discuss her extraordinary encounter, what she witnessed, and why she believes it remains relevant to understanding the Epstein story today.
