Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford details the big problems with SB 1149 and SB 1150.
Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow is going all out to get two big bills passed by the committee on Civil Rights. And they appear set to violate the rights of those that wish to bear arms.
According to the Gun Owners of America, SB 1149 and SB 1150 are very close to passing. If passed, they will amend the Handgun Licensure Act to do the following:
- Prohibit an individual from manufacturing, assembling, importing, purchasing, selling, or transferring a firearm, frame, or receiver that did not have a valid serial number.
- Beginning January 1, 2025, prohibit a person from knowingly possessing a firearm or any completed or unfinished frame or receiver that was not imprinted with a valid serial number.
- Prohibit the use of a 3D printer or CNC milling machine for unlicensed firearm manufacturing.
- Prohibit the sale of 3D printers or CNC milling machines for the purpose of unlicensed firearm manufacturing and specify that there would be a presumption that the machines would be intended for manufacturing if marketed as such.
- Prohibit an unlicensed individual from manufacturing more than three firearms annually and require the individual to notify the MSP within 10 days of producing a firearm.
- Prescribe misdemeanor and felony penalties for violating the bill’s provisions.
- Require a person who moved into the State to comply with the serialization requirements within 90 days of moving.
- Building homemade firearms is an American tradition that has existed since the founding of our country.
Obviously this is a big problem, as the “crimes” listed in these steps are harmless activities that non-violent gun owners partake in.
So what can be done? Joining us now to discuss this situation further is Stephen Willeford, who currently serves as spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. Stephen is the “hero with a gun” from the Sutherland Springs incident in 2017, which he has since co-written a book about. We welcome him to the show!
Q&A:
- Why is McMorrow so determined to get these two bills passed?
- Why do these bills list activities as “crimes” when they’re anything but?
- What do you think the chances are that these bills will end up getting passed? Could someone potentially sue and use the Second Amendment to get them knocked back down?
- What can Michigan citizens standing up for their gun rights do in an effort to fight back?
- You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
- Where can people find your book?
- Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
