Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford points this out as a crucial example of why gun restrictions aren’t the answer for stopping criminals.
Seattle just set a record for 2023 – but it’s not the kind it was hoping to boast about.
According to various news reports, the crime-stricken city has become the home for a new record in homicide victims in 2023. Over 70 have been recorded thus far for the year, and more could come within the month of December.
The number was confirmed by Seattle police, and Callie Craighead, a spokesperson for Mayor Bruce Harrell, noted, “This record trend of homicides is extremely concerning and shows there is more work to be done to keep Seattle residents and communities safe, take guns off our streets, and hold those who cause harm accountable for their actions.”
That said, the city’s current approach – putting gun restrictions in place for its current citizens – is far from the answer. In fact, it’s made matters worse, with even more criminal acts including robberies, assaults, and, as noted above, homicides. So what now?
Joining us to discuss the matter further is Stephen Willeford, a spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall Willeford being the “hero with a gun” back in Sutherland Springs back in 2017, a situation he’s since written about. His expertise on gun rights will certainly be useful in this matter.
Q&A:
- We’ve been seeing several states try and place gun restrictions of some sort in place, only for the Second Amendment to lead to most of them being knocked down. Why do you think local governments continue to try to set them up?
- What does Seattle’s sky high homicide rate say about the United States in 2023 as a whole?
- Do you think Seattle’s inability to hire more police officers to handle the growing criminal element is a big problem?
- Will things get worse for Seattle if they don’t adapt to more effective solutions to handle crime?
- You’ve often talked about how effective Constitutional Carry (or Concealed Carry) is, particularly when it comes to “active shooter” events. Why do you think it’s so effective, and why haven’t more states adapted to the rule?
- You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
