Sacramento shooters found to be gang members

If guns were outlawed, would tragedies like this stop—or escalate?

Police now believe that five people firing shots in the recently Sacramento tragedy were gang members. Joe Biden’s proposed solution to stop future shootings is to ban or curtail private gun ownership. The other side of this issue is from 2nd Amendment rights advocates who believe private citizens should continue to be armed as a deterrent to crime and for self-defense.

The question is: If we had enough gun restrictions, would that have stopped this tragedy?

Joining us in this discussion is Blake Harbin, a wheelchair user who says he needs the right to defend himself, his family, and his business.

Talking Points and Blake Harbin’s point of view:

  1. Blake, do you believe stronger gun laws would have stopped this tragedy?

Answer: Not at all. Passing laws banning citizens from owning guns would allow gangs to run roughed over all of us. Imagine the scenario. Formerly law-abiding armed citizens would become ‘criminals.’ If private gun ownership was outlawed, and if someone was breaking into my home and I chased them away, I’d be dragged off to jail for stopping a crime. We must not allow bad politicians to exploit emotions to pass bad laws.

  1. You believe that citizens need guns to protect themselves, their families, and their communities. Expand on that.

Answer: Rather than turning current lawful gun owners by criminalizing guns, we need to keep firearms in the hands of people to protect their families and communities from criminals, whether they be in gangs or lone wolves trying to break into our homes or businesses.

  1. What do we know about the Sacramento shootings?

Answer: According to police, it can definitely be said and pointed out that the weapons used in the recent Sacramento shootings were not only stolen by gang members. What’s more, they were likely modified to the extent that they would have been illegal as they were converted to automatic rifles.

  1. Criminals can and will continue to be criminals. Using tragedies such as this to crack down on gun violence is utterly ridiculous. The only people that these theoretical laws affect are law-abiding citizens who have a right to defend themselves and “keep and bear arms,” as guaranteed to us in our great country’s constitution.
