Removing Guns From College Campuses Isn’t the Answer To Quelling Violence, Expert Notes (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

“Hero with a gun” Stephen Willeford notes why John Lott’s statement couldn’t come at a better time.

With violent acts taking place at universities across the United States, some are discussing the possibility of potentially banning guns from campuses. However, one expert believes this isn’t the way to go.

Speaking with Fox News, John Lott, Crime Prevention Research Center Founder and President, explained, “College campuses generally have low crime rates, but safety is always important, and police can’t always be there. A little over 60 percent of colleges with more than 2,500 students have armed officers, and they average just 2.4 officers per 1,000 students, and only a fraction of those officers are on duty at any point in time. Just like with police off campus, campus security can’t protect everyone.”

To further elaborate that guns aren’t the threat, however, Lott broke down numbers based on a report spanning from 2012 to May 2021 revolving around gun violence. During that time, the only incidents involved accidental discharges, and no actual shootings.

“With all the states that colleges that allow campus carry, we don’t need to guess how it will work out. There is not one instance of a gun fired by someone legally carrying a gun on campus threatening another person or trying to commit a crime,” Lott explained.

With us now to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, who serves as a spokesman for Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is certainly welcome in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. What do you think about Lott’s statement pertaining to the low number of guns fired on college campuses?
  2. Do you think school administrators should take a closer look at this instead of calling for an all-out ban?
  3. You’ve always been behind the idea of Constitutional-Carry in favor of any kind of gun ban. Why do you believe this would be more effective?
  4. Do you believe this is a solution that President Biden should take a closer look at, rather than trying to pass his ban on assault weapons?
  5. As a “hero with a gun,” you’ve seen firsthand the effects that come from someone attacking others. Do you see this being a big problem on campus? Do you believe Constitutional-Carry is the best way to go? And if so, what should the selection process be like?
  6. Where can we learn more about you, as well as the Gun Owners of America?
