Red Flagging the Red Flag Laws!

A spokesman for the Gun Owners of America discusses how Red Flag laws violate the rights of private gun owners, particularly with a recent example in Michigan.

Though the Constitution clearly guarantees the right for everyone to bear arms (per the Second Amendment), there are some states that feel these rights should be hampered in the name of safety. Hence, the existence of “red flag” laws.

These laws enable state courts to order the temporary seizure of firearms from someone that they deem is a threat. That means that, with this law in place, they believe they can overcome the rights of said person for what they believe is their own safety.

The Gun Owners of America have been battling such laws for years, and have recently come across a new situation in Michigan that calls for their help.

A “Red Flag” law is in effect in the state. And even though Representative Jim DeSana introduced three different bills to remove it, the local House Judiciary Committee hasn’t even allowed a hearing on it yet.

The “Red Flag” law was heavily voted against when it was put in place two years ago, with a majority of Republicans voting against it. And yet, the Committee won’t do anything to repeal it. The question is why.

A spokesman for the Gun Owners of America – either Mark Jones or Stephen Willeford – joins us now to discuss the new coalition further. We welcome them to the show!

Q&A:

  1. Why do “red flag” laws get put in place to begin with? Do states believe they have the right to determine who is and who isn’t a danger within their region?
  2. Who’s usually responsible for putting the “red flag” laws together?
  3. Why do you think the House Judiciary Committee won’t take the time to listen to DeSana’s bills in an effort to repeal the “red flag” law?
  4. Are states becoming more concerned about mass shooting events and keeping “red flag” laws in place as a result?
  5. Can anything be done to combat these “red flag” laws legally?
  6. What can concerned Michigan citizens do regarding this matter?
  7. The Gun Owners of America recently hosted a GOALS 2025 event. Tell us more about it, and what you have planned for the next show.
  8. FOR STEPHEN: You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  9. FOR STEPHEN: Where can people find your book?
  10. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  11. FOR MARK: Tell us more about the Hunter Outreach program.
