Recent Supreme Court Decision Leads To Question of How States May Go Too Far To Silence Free Speech (Guest: Blake Harbin)

Freedom of speech has been under fire over the past few years. However, the Supreme Court recently decided that one state has gone too far when it comes to silencing it.

The court recently decided on a decision in favor of the Christian group Camp Constitution and its director, Harold Shurtleff. Overriding a previous court ruling, the Supreme Court unanimously (in a 9-0 vote) noted that Boston violated the group’s free speech rights, not allowing them to fly a flag bearing the image of a cross at City Hall. Boston had previously put a program in place allowing groups to do so while holding events before temporarily halting it to stop groups that would “publicize messages antithetical to its own.”

This does bring up the question of how far certain states would go when it came to silencing the rights of their citizens and, more importantly, voters. Joining us in this discussion is Blake Harbin, a Republican candidate in the 6th Congressional District of Georgia.

Q&A:

  1. What does this Supreme Court decision say about the importance of free speech?
  2. How do you think this court case could affect how other states operate in terms of their own free speech rules?
  3. What do you believe led Boston to the decision to stop Camp Constitution from flying their flag? Could it have been a choice to avoid controversy? Or something else?
  4. It seems that the battle for free speech is more important than ever now, especially with Elon Musk purchasing Twitter to “free” the platform. Do you see this as being a change for the better? What do you think about the critics that note it could lead to something worse? And what’s with Mike Lindell getting kicked off Twitter again?
  5. Could this decision inspire other groups to step up and speak about their message?
  6. You are running for Congress in the May Republican Primary in the 6th District of Georgia. Tell us about your race and your positions.
  7. What would make you a better Congressman than other Republicans in your Georgia primary?

Answer: One of my opponents is Rich McCormick, who voted for Hillary Clinton. The other is Jake Evans, a supporter of Defund the Police.

Blake Harbin is the CEO of Houzzle Financial, as well as a proud Georgia business owner and America First candidate who is running for Congress in Georgia’s 6th district. He recently took part in a debate regarding the seat, which you can view here. Find out more at blakeharbin.com.
