Putin Play / Guest: Frank Gaffney

Alaska Summit Shows Beijing is Using Moscow to Move Washington

The outcome of the recent Alaska summit underscores a sobering reality. Xi Jinping is attempting to play the United States, Vladimir Putin, and even Donald Trump like pawns in a grand strategy for geopolitical dominance.

Xi’s Putin Play has been put in play.

Frank Gaffney, former Reagan Pentagon official and founder of the Center for Security Policy, warns that Putin’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine was no rogue act. It was effectively greenlighted in Beijing during the Winter Olympics, when Xi and Putin declared their “no limits partnership.” That partnership, with Russia relegated to the junior role, is central to Beijing’s plan to reorder the world—dismantling the U.S.-led system, dethroning the dollar, and expanding influence through BRI and BRICS.

While the Ukraine war has not delivered a quick Russian victory, it has fulfilled Beijing’s real objective: distracting and depleting the U.S. and its allies, diverting resources from confronting China’s military build-up in the Pacific. And as Gaffney notes, Xi has kept the war alive—buying Russian oil, providing weapons, even signaling troop support—because he does not want it to end.

Now, Trump is being drawn into the trap. His instinct to stop the killing is noble, and his vision of weaning Russia away from China could serve America’s interests. But Gaffney cautions that Putin, owned by Xi, is prepared to tap Trump along—demanding concessions from Ukraine, enjoying renewed energy sales to Europe, and reaping trade with the U.S. while leaving NATO divided and the battlefield unresolved.

Meanwhile, Xi’s fingerprints are all over other global crises. Beijing summoned Iranian and Palestinian leaders ahead of October 7th, ensuring another front to distract the West. The result? U.S. forces stretched thin, Israel constrained, and China’s strategic position strengthened.

Gaffney concludes: the single most effective step to peace is not chasing deals with Putin, but helping the Chinese people end the CCP’s reign—starting with stopping Wall Street from funding our greatest enemy.
