President Biden and Vice President Harris Are Once Again Battling Against Assault Weapons – But What Does It Mean For Private Gun Owners? (Guest: Second Amendment)

Over the course of the weekend, both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have proclaimed war on assault weapons, in the face of growing violence in America. But the real question is what will come from their crusade when it comes to private gun owners.

Harris made her comments over the weekend, stating, “Assault weapons were specifically and intentionally designed to kill a lot of human beings quickly. It is a weapon of war. If you’ve ever looked at, if I may be so blunt, an autopsy photograph to see what it does to the human body. And the fact that we can’t get Congress to renew –  it’s not like we’re pulling something out of our hat. We’ve done it before as a nation – to renew the assault weapons ban, is outrageous.”

She then added, “You can support the Second Amendment. I support the Second Amendment, but we should agree we should not have weapons of war on the streets of America.”

Biden added further statements today, saying, “Assault weapons need to be banned. They were banned. I led the fight in 1994. And then under pressure from the NRA and the gun manufacturers and others, that ban was lifted in 2004. In that 10 years it was law, mass shootings went down. I’m determined to ban these weapons again, and high capacity magazines. … I’m not going to stop until we do it.”

To discuss this in further detail, we’ve invited a spokesperson from the Second Amendment Foundation to provide their perspective on this proclamation of war on assault weapons.

Q&A:

  1. Do you believe President Biden and Vice President Harris may be overreaching when it comes to calling for an all-out ban on assault weapons? Especially when it comes to private citizens owning them?
  2. Vice President Harris noted that she voices support for the Second Amendment, but then contradicts that statement by stating “weapons of war” should not be on the “streets of America.” Does this seem to be balancing between both sides?
  3. Do you believe any sort of gun bill put together by President Biden or Vice President Harris will have any kind of traction in Congress? Or will it likely see the same resistance we saw when the ban was knocked down in 2004?
  4. President Biden and Vice President Harris believe an assault weapons ban is the answer to stopping the growing mass shootings in America. If it were up to you, what kind of solution would you provide?
  5. What do you want to say to private gun owners who feel their rights are coming under attack under this new crusade?
  6. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
