Police Officer fired for shooting 12-year-old who was shooting at police Guest: Michael Letts

Interview guest, Police Officer Michael Letts

Intro: A police officer is being fired for shooting back at a suspect who was shooting at a police officer. But as it turned out, the suspect was 12 years old but is now dead. This begs the question: Is there an age limit for the use of deadly force? Our guest is Police Officer Michael Letts to help us answer this question and shed light on similar situations that might arise in the future. Welcome, Michael.

Q&A:

1.) Is there an age limit for the use of deadly force?

Answer: An officer is trained to use whatever force is necessary to contain or eliminate force being used to threaten the life of an officer, his fellow officers, or the lives of citizens in harm’s way. The critical factor is the deadly force, not the age of the assailant.

2.) Would an Active Shooter Vest make a difference in an officer’s response?

Answer: It definitely makes a difference in the response of an officer who is more secure in his protection, wearing a bulletproof vest and a Kevlar Helmet. The more secure an office is, the less likely we will see a hair-trigger response. But one has to keep in mind that a threat discharging a weapon is not only putting the officer and his partners at risk but the general population as a whole from stray bullets that can easily kill innocent people.

3.) Could the officer not just wound the shooter?

Answer: Officers are trained to take down the threat. Shooting a smaller moving target can easily result in a miss, thus exposing a stray bullet to the area while allowing the shooter to endanger the officers and surrounding community members.

4.) What would cause a 12-year-old to be shooting at officers?

Answer: The Socialist, liberal, democratic leadership that has propagated the Black Lives Matter/ ANTIFA defund, disrespect, and eliminate law enforcement officers has resulted in disrespect for authority and as such, incidents such as these will continue to become more common and frequent, with young age being more common.

5.) Where may we get more information or support your work at InVest USA?

Answer: InVestUSA.org

Michael Letts is CEO and Founder of  InVest USA, a national non-profit charitable organization based in Columbia, South Carolina. His charity helps hundreds of communities provide thousands of bulletproof vests for their police forces through educational, public relations, sponsorship, and fundraising programs.
