Petty Chinese Behavior Worsens Climate Change  (Guest: Nan Su)

The Epoch Times investigative reporter explains why China isn’t mutually cooperating with the U.S. to protect our climate.

While our countries currently are at odds over many issues, one would think that China would work with the United States when it comes to climate change. However, this isn’t the case.

new report from The Epoch Times indicates that the countries are far apart when it comes to any sort of climate agreement. This is in contrast to what U.S. climate envoy John Kerry noted during last year’s World Economic Forum.

Kelly Solan, senior fellow in energy and environment at Centennial Institute, noted the failure to connect. “We are going to work on the practicalities of how we move faster [to lower emissions],” he said. “Maybe we can help with technology of some kind to help China move faster. Maybe China could help us better understand some things we could do better.”

Given how tensions are at the moment between the two countries, that could be a problem. And it’s been building for some time. Last year, President Joe Biden was looking to put an end date in place for global coal consumptions. But Chinese leader Xi Jinping didn’t even intend the meeting, stopping his plan in its tracks. (For the record, China is actually the world’s biggest coal consumer, producer and importer.)

So what’s going to happen now with both countries so far apart? With us now to discuss this further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. Nan is a specialist in Chinese politics and business, so his insight will be useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. Considering that John Kerry once noted that the U.S. needs China in the fight for global climate change, how big of a problem is it now that it doesn’t seem to be in any kind of agreement?
  2. Do you think Xi Jinping and China simply want to focus on their own economy and issues rather than assisting the U.S. with its climate plans? Or do you think they’re concerned that the U.S. just won’t listen to what they have to say?
  3. Could the U.S. seek out different partners for its global climate resolutions? Or are they pretty much sunk without China?
  4. You made note that China is the leading coal producer and importer in the world.  Or are they concerned that Biden would make too many changes?
  5. What will happen if some sort of global climate agreement isn’t made between China and the U.S. over the next few years?
  6. China and the U.S. have been at odds for some time now. In fact, some believe they could be at war in a couple of years, with Russia possibly playing a part. Do you believe this could come to fruition?
  7. Speaking of what’s going on with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  8. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
